Résumé

From The Royal Hunt of the Sun (1964), Peter Shaffer's drama has become a landmark of the contemporary British theatre, due to that perfect combination of text and performance. His excessive preoccupation with the mise-en-scene springs from his own belief in the theatre, as he stated, as a place of entertainment and catharsis: "I passionately believe that people come to the theatre to be surprised, moved, illuminated .... They are receiving what you say viscerally" In this paper, we will study the stage directions of this play to show how he deals with all theatrical techniques to realize on stage a kind of "total" theatre, to reach the spectators' minds, senses and hearts.
