Abstract
OBJECTIVES: To find out features of information published in Spanish written press about HIV/AIDS pandemic, concerning Spanish prisons from 1981 to 2020. To describe the experiences of nurses in prisons. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A mixed, documentary, retrospective research, with thematic analysis using sequential explanatory design. We searched for news in the main national newspapers and conducted focus groups. RESULTS: There is little news on HIV and prisons; sections, temporality, publication trends, news sentiment are detailed. Perception of the professionals was that few news items were published. AIDS forced a structural change in prison healthcare. CONCLUSIONS: The press reflected little about the HIV pandemic in prison. The emotions of the news varied depending on the periods analysed. The role played by nursing professionals in prisons during the HIV pandemic agrees with the definition of Callista Roy's model of adaptation.
