Abstract
The present article examines Angelika Schrobsdorff’s Du bist nicht so wie andre Mütter through the lens of autofiction, a genre that blends factual and fictional elements. The author recounts the life of her mother, Else Kirschner, a Jewish German woman who defied the social and gender norms of her time, embracing an unconventional approach to motherhood while confronting the tensions between personal freedom and familial responsibility. The narrative also explores historical and familial memory, incorporating authentic documents such as letters and diaries that enhance the story’s credibility and reveal the many ways personal writing contributes to identity construction and cultural transmission. Through a complex narrative structure that shifts between voices and perspectives, Schrobsdorff not only pays tribute to her mother, but also presents an intimate and collective portrait of German Jews during the interwar period and the Nazi regime. Our analysis underscores the literary and testimonial significance of the work within the autofiction genre. From a multidisciplinary perspective, this article contributes to the study of written culture in its testimonial, literary, and formative dimensions, opening new avenues of dialogue between literature, memory, and identity in the context of contemporary reading and writing practices.
