Abstract

This Ph.D. essay analyzes the court environment and festive ceremonial of the Burgundian State (1419-1477), with particular emphasis on servants in the position of valets de chambre. In this research four methodologies are applied, among them the hermeneutic analyzes and the catalogation of the ducal accounts, decrees and ordinances has allowed the construction of a prosopographical study of valets de chambre. Afterwards, this research criticizes the Burgundian Court Literature. Finally, the mentioned methods have permitted to analyze the court iconography, with the iconographic motifs used in the courtiers daily activity and the meaning of the artistic production related to festivities. In that way, this study shows that valets de chambre, in addition to management and administrative tasks at the court, actively participated into the development of the ducal patronage and the creation of the sovereign’s image of power.
