Abstract

The four central themes of this study are digital journalism, sporting discourse, rhetorical figures of speech, and their didactic application. Online newspapers have become a meeting point for millions of users (they are free, allow global access and are interactive). Nowadays, new generation of readers use it daily. The sporting discourse, if some habitual grammatical errors are ignored, provides the perfect place for creativity and also for the improvement of linguistic expression because the headlines contain many rhetorical figures of speech which many readers do not even notice. If we look closely, we can find alliteration, similes, hyperbole, metaphors, synecdoche, metonymy and personification... but there are many more. In a digital world, where everything is updated several times a day, rhetoric is the best way to make our discourse relevant. We can teach Spanish if we look the headlines of the four most visited sport online newspapers in Spain: Marca.com, As.com, Sport.es and Mundodeportivo.com. We will look for rhetorical figures of speech in order to formulate five didactic proposals that could be applied in primary and secondary education in Spain. This research aims to: know the evolution of cyber-journalism; recognize the commonest rhetorical figures of speech in the headlines; evaluate digital journalism as a reference for literary creation and its use as a didactic tool to promote a creative learning from rhetorical figures of speech.
