Abstract

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death in industrialized countries. The usual risk factors do not explain the 20% of diagnosed cardiovascular events in clinical practice. Several publications attribute the character of independent risk factor for coronary heart disease in young patients to lipoprotein (a), associating high levels in monitoring with a greater evolutionary mortality figures. In the present study we have evaluated the prevalence of high levels of lipoprotein (a) in patients with peripheral arterial disease in its mild and moderate stages. We have analysed the correlation with other risk factors and the atherosclerotic load of the patient, established through the determination of the thickness of medial intimate carotid. This is a cross-sectional observational study of patients seen consecutively at the outpatient clinic of Vascular Surgery from September 2014 to May 2015.
