Abstract

The assessment of the efficiency of football players has traditionally been done using their inputs and outputs ignoring that some of their actions are undesirable. In order to overcome such limitation, in this paper it is evaluated the efficiency and the productivity change over time of a sample of forwards following two approaches: i) traditional considering as inputs the minutes played and the received passes and as outputs the number of goals and ii) alternative integrating additionally as undesirable outputs the shots fired outside and the offside incurred. Results shown that the introduction of undesirable actions modify significantly the identification of efficient and inefficient forwards. Regarding the productivity change, for most of the players, the consideration of undesirable outputs involves a lower increase of the productivity index and their components, the efficiency change and the technological change.
