Abstract

Wastewater treatment has associated the generation of sewage sludge with other types of waste that must be managed correctly to avoid negative effects on the environment. The progressive implementation of Directive 91/271/EEC, on urban wastewater treatment, has meant a important increase in the quantities of sewage sludge generated, which means that nowadays, the management of such waste involves high costs for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) operators. Therefore, in order to contribute to a better understanding on the cost structure, predict the economic impact to changes in the amount of waste generated, and ultimately, help to reduce costs related to the management of the waste generated in the proccess of wastewater treatment, this work develops two cost functions relating the cost managing of these waste with the amount of sludge, sand, urban waste and oily waste generated in a WWTP.
