The study presented here deals with the activity of the Cuatro Villas de la Costa de la Mar (Four Villas on the Coast of the Sea): San Vicente de la Barquera, Santander, Laredo, Castro Urdiales and its dual space environment, both terrestrial and its maritime jurisdiction. The Four Villas of the Coast received significant jurisdictional areas for their survival and enrichment. These large spaces were not easy to defend, which generated numerous conflicts with the neighbouring stately and rural jurisdictions. Commercial conflicts rose due to the fact that only the Four Villas could profit from the sea trade. This monopoly forced the rest of coastal villages to go to the ports of the villas to conduct any commercial fishing activity, which they questioned on multiple occasions.
