Abstract
This study derives from the opening lecture that was commissioned by the organizers of this congress, and it is focused on the analysis of the key role played by the Spanish Monarchy during the Thirty Years’ War. It offers a periodization of said conflict from the Spanish’s perspective and, at the same time, it shows the Monarchy’s important contribution in financing the war. Also, it tries to present a balance between the successes and failures, both military and maritime, as well as the diplomatic and propagandistic ones. Lastly, it points out the huge consequences that the war had for the Spanish Monarchy, especially from the economic point of view.
