Abstract

The cist burial phenomenon is little known in the Western Pyrenees. The cists of Ondarre and Arraztarangaña (Aralar) have a small chamber, and the latter, in addition, a small mound. The radiocarbon dates obtained place their construction during the Early Bronze Age. These structures were hypothetically conceived to bury a high status individual but their eventual reuse is observed throughout the 2nd millennium cal BC. The MNI estimated is 4 and 5 respectively, including both adult and juvenile individuals. The study of mitochondrial DNA from 2 individuals of each tomb indicates no matrilineal kinship. Grave goods are poor; they mainly consist of pottery sherds and a possible bone pendant decorated with incised dots in Ondarre.
