Value increase of food and agriculture production is one of the main action lines in local development policies. This action aims to increase revenues coming from local resources and therefore fix the population to rural areas. The so called �Protected Denominations of Origin (P.D.O.)� constitute the highlight of this process in the sense that products under this classification are meant to be quality products that have been produced in specific geographic areas. This work tries to determine the economic impact of towns belonging to the P.D.O. areas. With the help of a statistical multivariate technique called Discriminant Analysis, towns with a P.D.O. wine production in Castile and Leon are compared to others in the same region that, although have a similar production orientation, do not belong to a P.D.O. Results prove that there are differences between these two groups. In fact, municipalities with vineyards under a P.D.O. have in general better values in the variables used as welfare indicators, specifically those explaining the dynamism of the industrial sector and the population patterns.
