Abstract

even considering how one influenced the other, or vice versa. Such famous expression as 'the business-city binomial' has been used recurrently to emphasize that both need each other and, ultimately, to defend the interests of the traditional retail. But it has not been looked beyond and studied in depth how this pairing actually occurs. It has not been sufficiently analyzed either the link between retail and urban space in which it develops. The aim of this paper is to show how the transformation of Spanish cities and the change in the retail business model have been associated. To do this, we go back the pre-crisis period of the seventies, when the large department stores were not yet installed in our country. From there, we study the evolution of the city and of the Spanish commercial distribution to establish their interconnections. We check how the shopping centers are, in turn, cause and effect of the new city. We come to the main conclusion that there has been a rupture in the traditional business model, inherently linked to the urban center, without having been completely replaced, so far, by a new model based on super places.
