Abstract
In 1934 the Faculty of History belonging to the University of Valladolid decided to travel to Greece and to honour The Greco placing a memorial at his supposed birthplace, the village of Fodele, in Crete. The proposal was made by Cayetano de Mergelina, Professor of Archeology. The famous sculptor Mariano Benlliure was commisioned to carve a little portrait whose sitter was the autoportrait of the painter. In 1941 a copy of this one is placed in a memorial stone in the Faculty of History of Valladolid. The aim of this paper is to analize the academic, historiographic and ideological reasons of this relationship beetween the significance of this painter and the way to conceive the learning by Mergelina. New records and points of view are provided on this subject
