Resumo

The purpose of this study is the analysis of the compound gerund in journalistic texts from the late XIX century and early XX century. The analysis is based on parameters relating both to the construction contained in the compound gerund (presence of subordinate conjunctions, possibility of receiving proper negation, presence or absence of subject and proper complements and syntactic position) and to the semantic relation between the gerund and the main clause. The results of this research suggest that the gerund compound variant, in the time and text type considered in this study, yields a performance that does not match exactly the traditional use described in grammars.
