Resumen
The corpus for this study is a set of letters from the first volume of the six that make up the complete edition of the correspondence between Santander and Bolívar (Bogotá, Fundación Francisco de Paula Santander, 1988). Although it is a modernized edition, we consider that the texts maintain interest for pragmatic discourse analysis. We analyzed a sample of letters referring to the beginning of the interpersonal communication between the two leaders and the episode of the so-called campaign to liberate New Granada, conducted between late May and early August 1819. The analysis will study aspects related to theories currently applied in the fields of sociocultural pragmatics and discourse analysis. It thus seeks to explore the possibilities offered by both disciplines for the historical study of Spanish in the Americas in the initial stage of formation of national states.
