Abstract
In the iconographic tradition of the Dominicans, the visual aspects are especially important as bearers of information and meaning. The Order of Preachers, whose motto is “Contemplate and convey to others what has been contemplated”, gives the image a high symbolic value, which is able to shed light in a world in darkness to carry out its mission of salvation of souls. The persuasive and evocative power of the image is very effective in the apostolic work and has been very useful in decisive moments, such as the discovery of the New World or the Counter-Reformation. Here is a review of the most outstanding properties of the image in different contexts of preaching, drawing conclusions for the work of translation.
