Abstract

A multicultural perspective in musical education has been analysed from different points of view. Studies on multiculturalism and interculturalism with regard to music and education; criticism about the content of the curriculum in relation to musical diversity; the evaluation of the available pedagogic material; the proposal of didactic alternatives -all of this shows a genuine interest in the renovation of musical education in schools and its adaptation to current society. Yet, in practice, musical education based on diversity is nothing more than a timid rea.lity- and this is in the best of cases. . The responsibility for making the necessary change belongs to many sectors, which are reluctant to become involved. It is, however, the teacher, who chooses with which music to work and how to work with it in the classroom, tliat becomes the real agent of change. Thus, we turn our attention to future teachers in order to get to know their views on intercultural education, how they conceive of musical diversity in schools, what their experience is, and how receptive they might be - all of which will help to lay down guidelines for a more realistic approach to this question in teacher training programs.
