Abstract
This paper refers to the judicial powers of municipal magistrates as they appear in Justinian's Corpus iuris civilis (6th century), specifically in the Digesta, in order to make a contribution to the description of the judicial organization in the Roman cities in the age of Emperor Justinian I. The information contained in the Digest is related to the one of the municipal statutes of classical period (1st century B.C. - 1st century A.D.) in order to determine the classicity of the texts compiled by Justinian. The result is a substantial coincidence between both sources, in contrast to the evidence of considerable changes in the organization of the cities during the Late Roman Empire.
