Abstract
The author provides a close look at mass unemployment, the most important social disease of western civilization during the Depression of the 1930s. Surveys and reports on the period, literary pieces, film clips and popular songs help to depict the world of material deprivation and personal degradation of large sections of the population of Central Europe and the United States.
