Songs are a cultural element that at first sight could be considered of a lesser importance or little account, but their educational potential is really high. This article focuses on the songs that are part of what has been called «Canción de Autor», which had a great influence in Spain between 1960 and 1980. The article provides a reflection on the educational purpose of songs, an analysis of the educational resources used by singer-songwriters and a description of the educational contents, which sometimes is done through the lyrics of the songs themselves. Among those contents are: the dissemination of the works of our major poets, the defence of the linguistic identity, the promotion of a critical conscience, and a fundamental contribution to a different and more varied emotional nature.
