Abstract

The early years of Ponce de León in the New World are poorly documented, as well as his background in his native León. We hardly have news of his first master, Pedro Núñez de Guzmán, who enjoyed high profile at the Spanish Court of the early sixteenth century. The friendship between Guzmán and frey Nicolás de Ovando, the third Spanish governor of Española Island, proved to be decisive in Ponce's career and trust by the authorities.
