Abstract

The concept of oasification, that is: a natural process opposite to desertification, is developed in this study. To restore degraded lands, their slope's physiography must be slightly modified by means of a correct preparation of the soil, building sink zones (microponds), where runoff, soil and nutrients can concentrate. Two equations are developed to size the microponds conveniently for redressing the dangerous process of desertification. Progressive and regressive series of the SCS curve number are proposed in this work. The hydrological effects of some current procedures followed in the preparation of the soil for reforestation, according to the model MODIPÉ, are also described. Finally, the article describes a traditional Spanish oasification method, known as "riego de boqueras" or "riego de turbias", where our earlier generations show us their wisdom andkno- wledge in combating desertification.
