Resumen

In this paper we analyse the evolution of the concept of "community" in American big cities from a diachronic point of view contrasting the first years of settlement and today's society. The idea of studying this concept came after listening to so me political speeches during the elections that called for the unity of the American community. This sense of community that all politicians want to emphasize goes back to the idea the first settlers had of sharing the common grounds, overlooking the facts of social background in order to create a new society that included everybody. But the present sense of community we observe in big cities is different if we look at the statistics of several business magazines. The idea of community has lost the sense of inclusion and works with the concept of excluding all who have not reached the top. The result is the creation of enclosed communities that have nothing to do with the real world or with the idea of community advanced by politicians.
