Resumen

In this paper we are going to witness the impressions that an English student receives when he first arrives in Spain from a collection of letters he wrote and gathered in a volume, that also includes his diary, under the title Chapters Containing Prose and Verse. This English student is James Standen who comes to study in the English College of Valladolid in 1830. He carne to Spain under a vow of obedience to his superiors and therefore this trip was not his own choice; that is why we find a shade of melancholy and sadness in the letters he writes to his English friends when he relates his anxieties and his joys. We have chosen five letters from the volume addressed to five different people in which we can appreciate his first contact with Spain and the different discourse he uses depending on the addressee.
