Zusammenfassung
This paper reviews the most important recent models making the research and development (R&D) the engine of growth. The survey starts in 1990 and deals only with the endogenous growth literature. The distinction between horizontal and vertical innovation is explained, analyzing in each case the determinants of the amount of R&D, which in turn determines the rate of growth of the economy. The empirical evidence about the contribution of R&D to growth is also summarized and finally we cover the recent models on international technology diffusion and its effect on international convergence.
