Abstract
Not only growth and distribution are both endogenous outcomes of the economic system, but also the concept of inequality itself. This paper presents the properties and principles that characterize the core of regular measures of inequality and offers an overview of some of the main directions of current research in the field, both for finding more accurate measures of specific aspects of inequality and for integrating consistently its multiple dimensions. To illustrate the relevance of the achievements and outstanding challenges, the paper includes a concise review of the literature on global inequality.
