Abstract

The covers of the first theoretical book by Juan de Arfe, named Quilatador de plata y oro, are dedicated (in its two 16th century editions) to Cardenal Espinosa and Felipe Il. Both covers display, together with the standard shields, a series of allegorical elements which might be interpreted by means of the Emblematic Literature. The goldsmith and author of these books was not unfamiliar to the use of that sort of literature, as is showed in some processional wards.
