Abstract

The main purpose of this work is to establish a methodology to appreciate how citizens perceive noise and its effects. This is done in order to determine perception conflicts, most annoying sound sources, dose-effect correlation and eventually follow up existing "Action Plans". The procedure has five main stages: Survey design, Field work, Data analysis, Dose-effect correlations and Sample stratification. The procedure has been applied to the population of Málaga (Spain) and the results have shown that 54% of the population is highly annoyed by noise. Traffic noise has turned out to be the main annoying sound source. In this case there is a non linear relationship between dose and annoyance. The majority of the citizens are more willing to pay to improve their own dwelling acoustics characteristics than to improve the environmental acoustics in their neighbourhood. Once the results have been analysed, the sample is divided into ten homogeneous "clusters"
