Résumé

The decade 1790-1800 witnessed a substantial increase in the publication of novels in Spain. The present study links the development of the novelistic genre with the activities of publishers who made it possible, focusing on the expansion of publicity, circuits of distribution and sale techniques which were a response to the ever -widening readership. Advertisements carried by the contemporary periodical press furnish information for the analysis of sales methods and provide key data concerning pricing, formats, points of sale, and other features. Taken in conjunction with other sources the advertisements provide details of new reading practices which were promoted by Spain’s novelistic output at the end of the 18th century.
