Abstract

Alfonso X's controversial succession called into question the legitimacy of his offspring, whose position was constantly challenged. The conflict over this issue lasted a long time: in 1386, Juan I defended his right to the throne through his kinship with the Infantes de la Cerda, considering they had been unfairly deprived of the Crown a century earlier. An analysis through this period's events will lead to a deeper knowledge of the complex topic of Royal Legitimacy. The elements used to build it, how it could be arised or destroyed or its value as a political weapon are some of the aspects that will be discussed.
