The article investigates the relations between poetry and philosophy in the works of two poets quite distant at first sight: Wallace Stevens and Antonio Colinas. In his essays, Stevens affirms that poetry is always superior to philosophy, and he calls supreme poetry to that poetry which contains a philosophical thought. Philosophy seeks truth by means of reason whereas poetry makes use of the imagination. They are, however, the two sides of the same coin. Reason expresses itself through propositions while imagination ponders. Antonio Colinas dedicates some essays to analyse the relations between thought and poetry. For Colinas, both philosophy and poetry take an active role in the unveiling of mystery. The poet is the person who interprets the second reality. Reason and poetry are incompatible, though poetry and reflection are not. His interest in reflection leads him to study mysticism, Romanticism and María Zambrano’s philosophy, three fields in which he sees the working of poetry and thought.
