Abstract

The significant number of clay drums discovered in al-Andalusarchaeological record contrasts with the relative lack of studies about these instruments. Nevertheless, we believe that these findings are a privileged testimony of popular musical practices in Al- Andalus. By applying the multidisciplinary methodology developed for the archaeological research of musical instruments, we aim to deepen our understanding not only of the archaeological and organological value of these findings, but also of the uses, functions, performative contexts and playing techniques of the instruments. In this way, we will enhance this organological patrimony and show the important role played by music in the Islamic identity in the Iberian Peninsula.
