Resum
Insignias, which were the personal emblem or signs used by princes and European nobility from the middle of the 14th century, were a means to overcome the rigidity of the coats of arms and have a complementary relationship with heraldic art, in which the double functionality of each one of these emblematic manifestations will become evident and assumed: personal, in the case of insignias and related to lineage if not to dignity, in the case of heraldry. during our work we will address the study of its complex institutional evolution, that will take it from an original concept as a per- sonal emblem, not submitted to rules until it is converted into a corporative insignia of ecclesiastical or noble orders, favouring collective enjoyment and, indirectly, incor- poration into heraldry.
