Abstract

In 1870, the politician, writer, and translator Antonio Ribot y Fonseré published his own translation of an adventure novel for younger readers by the famous globetrotter, and prolific Irish writer, Thomas Mayne Reid: The Young Yägers, or, A Narrative of Hunting Adventures in Southern Africa (1857). Thanks to this translation, both contemporary readers, and those who have read it in later years, could learn, first hand, how rough lifestyle the Dutch colonizers endured in the mostly unexplored territories of Southern Africa. The illustrations provided of that unusual animal world also deserve some analysis.
