Resumen

The short chronological distance between the two great wars of the twentieth century left an indelible mark upon the future of the planet. After the defeat of the central empires in 1918, the forlorn hope of achieving an enduring peace, cherished by many of the leading protagonists of that time, proved impossible. To a great extent, the content and consequences of the Peace Treaties of Versailles were to blame for this failure. From 1945 onwards the widespread awareness that under no circumstances should another conflict of similar dimensions ever arise was often explicitly recollected in goodwill declarations which, nevertheless, would eventually become blurred upon the outbreak of the Cold War. Armed confrontations, although far from the European stage, showed the feebleness of the idea of universal peace on which the new world order had been constructed. This article aims to provide an analysis of the weaknesses and achievements of the foundations upon which there was an attempt to build true peace until the radical transformations of the international order in 1989-1991.
