Zusammenfassung
Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is a disease process that occur in eyes with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and accounts for the majority of failures following retinal detachment surgery. We evaluated the usefulness of subconjunctival injected 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) and dexamethasone in the prevention of PVR. Thirty patients with retinal detachment associated to risk-factors such as aphakia, vitreous hemorrhage, giant tears, or previous retinal surgical procedure, were treated with 5-FU (15 eyes) and dexamethasone (15 eyes). We also evaluated the appearance of PVR in retrospect on a control group of 30 patients. Five cases (33%) treated with 5-FU and 6 cases (40%) treated with dexamethasone developed PVR. This complication was observed in 24 patients (80%) of the control group. Subconjunctival inject substances decreased the incidence of PVR. Both drugs exhibited to be useful in inhibiting this disease process. The use of these substances should be considered in preventing PVR.
