Abstract

In this paper we propose a cognitive-pragmatic approach to a specific form of formulaic routines called situation-bound utterances. Following Kecskés we distinguish three kinds of them according to their degree of semantic fixedness (lexicalization) in relation to the situation where they are used. In our opinion, the situation-bound utterances have to be described within the frames they belong to, otherwise there is no way to get their real meaning. Therefore we propose the frame of MEAL as we conceive it, both in German and European Spanish culture. As a result of it we can not only determine the place of a great number of situation-bound utterances in the context of a certain frame, but – thinking of foreign language acquisition – we also show that linguistic fluency cannot be reached without cultural fluency.
