Abstract

The steady increase in vehicles on the road network is the source of several problems that directly affect citizens. Governments are forced to respond with all the means at their disposal. However, resource scarcity influences this response so it is necessary to find efficient, innovative and intelligent solutions, especially in the urban environment where problems are more severe. This article describes part of the work we are doing aimed at providing an efficient solution to the traffic lights management in the city of Valladolid (Spain). The final objective is to develop a software tool, based on artificial intelligence concepts and methods, able to ensure that the elements involved in the active regulation of the city are coordinated and self-managed in order to respond quickly to changing traffic needs.
