Abstract

Nursing staff are responsible for patient care, and they have a more direct contact with the users of the health system. Health managers calculate the number of nursing staff required per unit based on the analysis of workloads. The quality of the care provided is directly related to the time spent for the development of these tasks and, therefore, this quality of care is associated with the staff workload. Several studies point out there is direct relationship among increased workloads and work stress and increased errors in care by health workers. It leads to the development of instruments that allow an objective measurement of the workload in order to ensure the highest quality in health care, as well as the welfare of the workers, avoiding pathologies that might increase in stress. There are several assessment scales for nursing workloads aimed at intensive care units that are not comparable to non-critical hospitalization units. The aim of this study is to develop and validate a workload assessment scale that measures nursing tasks in a hospitalization unit in order to verify the proper management of nursing resources used, as well as to ensure quality in health care and patient safety, because approximately 90% of hospital beds are for non-critical patients.
