Abstract

The present article seeks to assess the position of the two main centrist and right-wing forces in Spain during the process that led to the construction of the autonomous region of Castilla y León. The objective is to analyse and explain the paradox inherent in the fact that the Castilla y León autonomous project followed, to a large extent, the positions of the Left, when the centrist and right-wing parties enjoyed electoral and institutional majorities in the provinces that would comprise the autonomous region, and were even hegemonic in some cases. The main hypothesis of this article is that the lack of definition of a clear autonomy project, in terms of both the territorial and institutional structuring of autonomy, was what caused the Left’s proposals to ultimately prevail.
