Abstract

As a Hispanic version of the Holy Crusade, the Military Orders, which emerged in the kingdoms of León and Castilla in the second half of the 12th century – Calatrava, Alcantara and Santiago – will adopt since the begining the Christian emblem par excellence – the cross – to distinguish and identify themselves, having the most prominent manifestation in the sigillar supports. Its preparation, however, will be made in different ways, being the chromatism its most pronounced characteristic. Over time, these emblems will become the main source of making personal heraldic weapons of a significant number of its members.
