Abstract

This article gathers and analyzes the publications by, and about, Le Corbusier, in North America, in the interwar period, which matches with the initial dissemination of his ideas and includes his participation in the Modern Architecture International Exhibition at MoMA in 1932, his painting exhibition at the Becker Gallery in 1933 and his trip with exhibition of 1935. During this time, industrial standardization, the development of the automobile or the complex urban phenomena were consolidated in the United States, which drew to Le Corbusier, and contributed to the interest in his reflections about the machine. An updated, operational and more complete list of writings is provided, which makes it possible to carry out an elementary bibliometry, with 15 texts by Le Corbusier and 73 others by different authors. Many of them were senior collaborators (Rice, Frey, Stonorov) or admirers on MoMA (Kocher, Barr, Heap, Lescaze, Hood), with Hitchcock at the head. Only a few personalities like Wright, Fuller, Bauer or Mumford reacted critically. Some favorable media and institutions stood out (Architectural Record, The New York Times, The Studio, MoMA, Architectural League). Regarding the format, it is not a question of academic or methodological studies, but of brief and provocative arguments, skillfully resorting to headlines and own images alongside the text. The main theme was not its architecture, but his urban projects.
