Abstract

The main aim of this study is to find out the changes that have ocurred in the consumption pattern of textile products, by thoroughly analysing the presence of clothes and household textiles in the bridal portion. The development of the consumption of textiles in Castille between 1700 and 1860 can be demonstrated by differentiating the tendencies, contrasts and rhythms of the urban world with those of the rural world. The different variations can be linked to the various levels of the patrimonial goods of the people, as defined by the estimation of the value of the dowry. We shall analyse the transformation of the female wardrobe, and of the textiles used in the interior of the houses, by looking for any changes in the tipology of these textiles, and in its quantity, quantity and variation. The growth and diversification of these stocks can then be linked with the demand and with the mechanisms of the spread of its comsumption amongst a large majority of the population.
