In the last decades much literature on linguistic research has shed light into the complexity of academic writing in a foreign language, focusing not only on the quality of end products, but also on the production processes entailed. To this respect, significant research has been devoted to studying how mother language interferes text production in a foreign language. In this context, this paper is derived from the teacher training course “Academic English” held at the University of Valladolid in the academic year 2015-2016. The different strategies adopted by the participants according to their field of studies, their foreign language skills, and their familiarity with the distinctive features of scientific communication in English in different academic contexts are, in most cases, key issues that define text production. The study will lay the ground for describing the main characteristics of the texts produced in English by two groups of PhD students from different fields of study. Results will help us implement new specific teaching techniques and strategies to enhance the linguistic competences of the students in different specialised academic contexts.
