In 1956 a very especial novel by Kathryn Hulme, The Nun’s Story, was published. Soon it entered the New York Times bestsellers list as number one,and Hollywood adapted it to the big screenwith an exceptional director and a unique leading actress: Fred Zinnemann and Audrey Hepburn. Since the demolishing analysis made by Joseph Conrad, with his Heart of Darkness(1899, 1903),of the colonialabuses, under the patronage of the King of Belgium Leopold II,along the banks of the Congo River, no other work, getting its inspirationfrom this African river, had become aspopular as this one. 1950’s Spain did not keep aloof of the phenomenon of surprising popularity. The novel was translated in 1957 and in only four years it knew sixteen reprints. Thesubsequentmovie was dubbed and exhibited in Spanish commercial cinemas immediatelyafter its American release; translation, reception, popular novel, cinema, colonial Congo.
