Abstract
The aim of this work is to analyse the simultaneous influence of test and surround luminances on letter contrast sensitivity measurements. The final issue is to find environmental lighting conditions under which this psychophysical magnitude shows maximum invariance relative to luminance changes in the surround nearest the test. The clinical study performed, which involves test luminances from 10 to 600 cd/m2 and surround luminances from 1 to 600 cd/m2 , has allowed us to conclude that a test subtending a visual field around 4° with a luminance of 80 cd/m2 represents a contrast sensitivity test whose results are independent of surround luminance. This surround must be a visual field free from stray reflections or glare sources for the observer. These results establish the basis for a future directive concerning the lighting conditions for these measurements in the clinical practice
