Resumen
This paper deals with musical cosmopolitanism in Lisbon. My analysis focuses on the perspectives and action of the Portuguese Bagpipe Society since the late 1990s to promote a cosmopolitan approach to music associated to local “traditions”. For that purpose, I use Martin Stokes’ definition of musical cosmopolitanism (2007) as a starting point, and compliment his perspective with the perspectives on cosmopolitanism of Vertovec & Cohen (2002). My analysis exemplifies the utility of applying complementary approaches for expanding the traditional analysis of musical cosmopolitanism as pointed out by Stokes.
