Resumen

This paper aims to study the issue of the translation of catechisms in America during the 16th century. These texts provide a wealth of information about the contact or clash of civilizations and the communication problems between them. First we describe the cultural context in which these translations were made and we also study the problems of the friars to learn and describe the indigenous languages. Then we analyze the processes of translation, the approach to be followed for the translation of certain words and the difficulty to express abstract or non-existent concepts in the target culture. Finally we describe the reasons for translating the catechisms and we study the translation strategies followed by the friars as well as the problems arising from the translation of religious texts.
