El haiku en la poesía Americana Contemporánea, (II)

Resumen

This is the second part of an article published in ES, nº 18, 1994, 15-42, on the origins and development of the American haiku. This second part deals also with the haiku written in the USA in the last fifty years, starting with the end of World War n. T o commemorate the 50th anniversary of the atomic destruction of Hiroshima it starts with the beautiful tanka written by Geraldine C. Little 'For the Simple Creatures of Hiroshima'. The influence of Buddhism on American poetry and its connection with haiku is briefly analysed. Then an account and description is presented of a number of haiku collections which demonstrate the great development, variety, and perfection acquired by this poetic genre in America during the last fifty years. As a conclusion it can be said that American haiku has acquired a highly artistic and esthetic level and has contributed very positively to aid in the appreciation of Nature and the development of human consciousness.
